The story of America’s first 100% U.S.-sourced jellyfish collagen
WHY JELLYFISH? A HISTORICAL SUPERFOOD
Jellyfish have been consumed in Asia for centuries and are considered a superfood due to their high-quality collagen content. In Georgia, USA, cannonball jellyfish are one of the most abundant marine biomasses in the ocean and come summer, they wash up on the beaches completely wasted.
GEORGIA’S BLUE ECONOMY
In the 1990’s, Georgia’s first jellyfish industry began shipping these jellyfish overseas. For the next 20 years, the industry grew into the state’s largest seafood fishery by landings, creating much-needed jobs in the off-season of shrimping; however, due to geopolitical tensions and rising costs, exports of jellyfish have completely stopped. Couple that with the shrimp industry being outcompeted by cheaper, imported seafood. The result? Many generational Georgia shrimping families have closed their operations.
That is where our story begins.
RESEARCH TO MARKET
At 21-years-old and an aspiring food scientist at The University of Georgia (UGA), I thought working with jellyfish was super unique and intriguing, I did not think what would come next would forever change my life.
The idea was simple; how can we create demand for these jellyfish and help these struggling communities? Since they are considered a superfood in Asia and Americans do not like eating jellyfish, is there a way we can extract that collagen and turn it into something much less intimidating, like a powder? That’s exactly what we did.
After 7+ years at UGA, a patent-pending licensed technology and over $1 million in research grants, we created SimplySEA™ Jellyfish Collagen Peptides: America’s first 100% U.S.-Sourced jellyfish collagen. The only problem was no one believed in it.
We began in foods but realized it was tricky to get someone to eat anything with jellyfish. One day in the lab it struck me: I realized how soft the collagen solutions made my hands feel. What if we put this collagen into a skincare product? Ironically, I was recently given my first face cream, so naturally I added this collagen in there. For the first time, no one denied the jellyfish. No questions asked. That was the moment we decided to pivot and launch a skincare product as our first product to market.
In December 2025, JellyCoUSA launched America’s first 100% U.S-sourced jellyfish collagen skincare product.
MORE THAN JUST COLLAGEN
JellyCoUSA started because we believed we could help make a positive impact for the struggling coastal families and businesses by creating demand for these jellyfish. We are here to tell the story of the long-forgotten families that built the coast.
And somewhere along the way, through the uncertainty, the long nights, the moments where nothing seemed to be working and all hope felt lost, I learned something that no amount of success or money could ever teach: we cannot put our hope into temporary things of this world. When you put your trust in God through His Son Jesus Christ and do work with integrity, a genuine heart, pure motives, and a desire to honor and live for Him rather than for ourselves and our desires, the rest has a way of falling into place. And that is exactly what has been happening.
